THE UNLIKELY HALF-MARATHONER

Embarking on a half marathon journey can be intimidating, especially when you’re dealing with physical limitations. But that’s what makes the experience all the more rewarding

Let me share with you the lessons I learned from running my first half marathon, even though I could only run 5 km a mere 3 months ago!

In fact, I had almost given up on running long distances all together. It was only because my pastor had challenged my for a sprint-triathlon last december, that I started running again. I figured I was probably to old and I assumed that sore knees over 40 are just part of life, right?

WRONG.
In my case it was simply that my legs werent used to running anymore.
Yes, the meniscus in my knee is cracked, battered and bruised, so I figured that this was the reason why my knee would always hurt and swell up after a long run.

The truth though is, I was only partially right.

Yes, It was the meniscus that made my knees swell up and painful. BUT it were the unconditioned muscles that were the real problem.
The reason why my knee actually started hurting was because my unconditioned muscles in my legs would tighten up and than start to push part of my meniscus out.
Just like a crooked cog in a machine, this would than stop everything else from working correctly.
Luckily for me, muscles can be trained and I knew what I had to do
Slowly but surely, over the next 12 weeks, I conditioned my leg muscles, and like a phoenix rising from the ashes, I watched as my running capacity soared.

As the weeks flew by, I transformed from a struggling 5 km runner to a determined half marathon athlete . My legs seemed to have made peace with my battered meniscus, and together, they were ready to take on the world.
Back to this fateful Sunday morning, I laced up my shoes and took a deep breath. I had come so far, but the real test was about to begin. With my heart pounding in anticipation, I joined the stampede of runners as the race commenced.
To my amazement, not only did I finish my first half marathon, but I also completed it in just under 2 hours (1:56:18)! I had defied all odds and emerged victorious, proving to myself that age and physical limitations were no match for determination and the right training.

So, if you ever find yourself thinking that you’re too old or too broken to chase your dreams, remember my tale of triumph and know that anything is possible. For, as the unlikely half-marathoner, I stand as a testament to the power of perseverance and the incredible potential that lies within each of us.
